Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Knowing your boobs could save your life! Almost 11,000 women could be living with undiagnosed breast cancer because of the pandemic, according to a new analysis by Breast Cancer Now. Because there has been a drop in GP referrals, less access to treatment, suspensions to breast cancer screenings and women not wanting to ‘burden the NHS’, the charity has said that 10,700 fewer people were diagnosed with the disease between March and December 2020 than they would have expected. So ladies, it's time to get checking those boobs! Below is a simple diagram to follow if you need a little guidance - keep reading to find out what to look for, videos and our favourite breast cancer awareness charities.

What to look for when checking your boobs:

- Changes in skin texture

- Nipple discharge

- Swelling in your armpit or around collarbone

- A sudden change in size or shape

- A rash or crusting of the nipple or surrounding area

- Nipple inversion

What to feel for when checking your boobs:

- It is important to get to know the normal rhythm of your boobs so you will detect anything abnormal quickly.

- Feel for irregular lumps (which can be relatively small) that are firm and solid. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lvOp16CbWwg&t=2s

What do you do if you notice these changes?

Obviously if you notice anything unusual or a new lump, book yourself in to see your doctor as soon as possible.

Our favourite Breast Cancer Awareness Charities you need to check out if you haven't already!

Coppa Feel are the first breast cancer charity in the UK to solely create awareness amongst young people, with the aim of instilling the knowledge and tools they need to get to know their bodies. They like to talk about a serious message in a light-hearted way, empowering people to start healthy habits for life. “Breast cancer can affect any body, getting to know yours could save your life”

Know Your Lemons, their mission is to improve early detection for breast cancer worldwide through creative and empowering education. As of 2020, they have reached 1 billion people online because their #knowyourlemons campaign is something people love to look at and share. They have helped women discover the change on their breast was a potential symptom and helped save their life with that powerful knowledge.

The Pink Ribbon Foundation is a grant making trust with a mission to fund projects and provide financial support to UK charities which relieve the needs of people who are suffering from, have been affected by breast cancer, or who work to advance the understanding of breast cancer and its early detection and treatment.

Breast Cancer Support is a breast cancer charity providing care, and helping breast cancer patients worldwide who can’t afford medication or treatment. They do not regard medicine and the ability to see a medical professional as a privilege but a basic human right everyone should have regardless of their geographical location, race, age and background. So they’re fighting breast cancer in countries across the globe to reduce breast cancer mortality. Help us make sure we’re there for everyone affected by breast cancer.

Prevention is better than cure so make it your mission this October to get to know your boobs and keep them safe. For more support on any of the above topics, visit the chosen charities or contact your GP and together let's beat breast cancer.
